Caleb, a skilled professional from the UK, volunteered with PEPY Empowering Youth in Siem Reap on a Measuring and Evaluation project. With a strong background in the corporate sector, Caleb was eager to expand his resume with international volunteer experience.
In this interview, Caleb shares his insights and experiences from his time volunteering in Cambodia.
Can you tell us a bit about your volunteer project?
I focused on improving PEPY’s data management systems. I assessed how they collected, stored, and delivered data, and then recommended improvements.
What motivated you to apply for this project? What did you hope to achieve?
After four years at the same company, I was ready for a new challenge. While I’m an avid traveler, I haven’t explored much of Asia. Volunteering with PEPY offered the perfect opportunity to combine my desire to travel with the chance to make a meaningful impact. I knew I could provide valuable input to PEPY, while also gaining firsthand experience with new cultures and people in a captivating location.
What was the single most important reason you decided to volunteer?
The opportunity to travel and learn from a new culture was a major motivator.
Can you elaborate on a specific achievement you’re proud of from your volunteer project?
I’m most proud of persevering and continuing to contribute to PEPY’s work remotely during the pandemic. Despite the challenges, I was able to make a positive impact.
Did this volunteer experience benefit your future studies or career? If so, how?
Absolutely. I gained valuable experience in the NGO sector and developed a strong understanding of M&E terminology and processes. This experience has given me the confidence to pursue an M&E role in a different organization, and I now have a clearer understanding of the areas where I can further develop my knowledge.
Looking back, do you feel the time you spent volunteering was sufficient?
Yes, the time commitment was perfect for me.
What did you enjoy most during your free time in Cambodia?
Exploring the country’s incredible temples and natural wonders was a highlight of my experience.
Do you have any advice for aspiring volunteers who want to follow in your footsteps?
Don’t hesitate to take the leap!
In the worst-case scenario, you can always return home. Embrace this opportunity to step outside your comfort zone, explore new activities, and connect with people from different backgrounds.
Remember to take time to understand the local work culture before diving in and making suggestions.
