We are pleased to feature an interview with Mrs. Konthea Mean, Managing Director of Journeys Within Our Community (JWOC), a leading Cambodian non-profit based in Siem Reap.
JWOC has been a long-term partner of Professionals Doing Good, and since 2005, its mission has been to empower disadvantaged Cambodian youth by providing them with educational opportunities and essential skills training to help them build brighter futures.
Q: Looking back: JWOC is one of the longest-operating NGOs in Siem Reap. What are your proudest achievements across JWOC’s history? And what are the key factors that have contributed to JWOC’s resilience over time?
A: The achievement I’m most proud of is being able to involve in shaping JWOC’s long-term strategic plan to ensure our mission and vision align with Cambodia’s evolving needs and JWOC’s capacity. This led to phasing out programs no longer critical and establishing the Better Futures program, directly helping youth prepare for their careers. At the same time, we’ve strengthened our scholarship program to ensure students gain not only education and employable skills but also develop a mindset of co-responsibility.
Q: JWOC’s mission is to empower low-income Cambodian youth through education and employment. Can you describe how JWOC has made a tangible difference in the lives of young Cambodian students over the years? Do you have a specific story to share that exemplifies this impact?
A: Our Scholarship Program showcases JWOC’s impact. For instance, our first scholarship alum now owns a tour company and chairs our local board. Others have achieved incredible milestones—one completed a PhD and serves as a deputy university director, while another leads an international organization.
Recent data from our 2022 alumni shows all are employed, with 61% in decent jobs earning double the basic income under professional work conditions, and some earning 2.5 times the minimum wage. Moreover, 80% contribute financially to their families and engage in charitable activities. One alum even sponsored a scholarship student who is now also part of the alumni network.
These achievements highlight their resilience and JWOC’s role as a support system in breaking barriers.
Q: How does JWOC stay innovative in its approach to education and youth development in a rapidly changing world? Can you share an example of a successful innovative program?
A: JWOC continuously adapts by monitoring social changes and conducting impact surveys every three years. Recognizing the rapid rise of technology, we’ve updated our curriculum to include digital skills like design, photography, videography, and tools like Google apps to enhance learning. Additionally, we integrate internships into our programs, allowing students to gain practical job experience alongside knowledge, which builds confidence and networks. Our growing collaborations now extend beyond NGOs to private businesses, ensuring wider opportunities for students.
Q: At PDG, we believe in capacity building and skill-sharing as a way to empower communities and individuals. How does JWOC invest in the professional development of its staff?
A. JWOC invests in its staff through internal training, annual training budgets, and scholarships for advanced courses. For example, one staff member recently earned a master’s degree scholarship through a JWOC partner. Senior staff, including myself, also benefit from mentorship programs supported by our US-based board of directors. Despite these efforts, we continue striving to grow and improve.
Q: Skilled Volunteering: As a long-term PDG partner, you have supported the principle of skilled volunteering. Can you share a story of how a skilled volunteer made a significant impact on a JWOC program or a student’s life?
A. Skilled volunteers have significantly enhanced JWOC’s programs. For example, Fulbright scholars recently reviewed our English curriculum, improving teaching quality and student engagement. Volunteers have also conducted impact assessments, contributing valuable insights that shaped JWOC’s long-term strategies.
Q: As PDG promotes ethical and sustainable volunteer experiences, how can international travelers who visit Siem Reap, even with limited time, contribute meaningfully to JWOC’s mission?
A. International travelers can contribute meaningfully by understanding our challenges and sharing our stories. Many visitors, after joining a scholarship tour, choose to sponsor students through the university. Spreading awareness about JWOC is another impactful way to support us.
Q: Tell us about your Leadership Journey: You are a successful female leader in Cambodia. Can you share a bit about your journey to this position and how your work at JWOC has impacted you personally?
A. My journey began as an English teacher before joining JWOC, where I took on challenges, grew, and embraced opportunities. With the support of inspiring mentors and my dedication to making a lasting impact, I progressed from project manager to managing director. In January 2024, I was promoted to Executive Director, the highest role at JWOC.
Q: What advice would you give to young Cambodian women who aspire to leadership roles?
A. For young women aspiring to leadership, my advice is to take responsibility, love what you do, stay humble, and embrace challenges. Growth lies beyond obstacles—never let judgments discourage your journey.
Q: What are JWOC’s key strategies for ensuring the long-term sustainability and impact of its programs? Where do you see JWOC’s future heading?
A. JWOC’s core value is creating a lasting, positive impact by responding to community needs. With 65% of Cambodia’s population being youth, investing in their education and skills remains critical. Our programs will continue to focus on education and fostering co-responsibility among young people.
