Spring Equinox Sunrise at Angkor Wat
Every year, at sunrise during the Spring Equinox, crowds gather at Cambodia’s Angkor Wat to witness one of the world’s most iconic celestial events.
As the Earth tilts, the rising sun illuminates Angkor Wat’s central spire, casting golden reflections across the temple’s lotus-filled ponds.
The lush greenery framing the ancient stones amplifies the scene—a harmony of nature, architecture, and human ingenuity.
For centuries, this phenomenon has drawn travelers and locals alike to Siem Reap, where the sun aligns perfectly with the temple’s central tower, creating a breathtaking display of symmetry.
A Solar Spectacle Rooted in History
This year, on March 21, 2025, between 5:00 AM and 6:30 AM, over 20,000 national and international tourists converged at Angkor Archaeological Park.
The event, known as Equinox Angkor, occurs twice yearly:
- the dry season equinox (March 21) and
- the rainy season equinox (September 22).
Those who miss the March alignment can witness it again during the Autumn Equinox, September 21–23.

Why This Event Unites the World
The Spring Equinox is more than a solar phenomenon; it’s a cultural ritual.
Local Cambodians attend with pride, honoring the Khmer Empire’s astronomical mastery and feeling connected with their ancestors.
International visitors, meanwhile, marvel at the precision of 12th-century engineering.
Last year’s March event drew 85,453 attendees, while September’s equinox attracted 38,236.
The Ministry of Tourism emphasizes sustainability through campaigns like “Tourism for All, All for Tourism,” ensuring Angkor Wat’s preservation amid growing global interest.
